Electrical fires are rare, but when they do happen, they can spread quickly and be extremely dangerous if not handled properly. At Emerald Isle Electric, your safety is our top priority. That’s why we’ve put together this essential guide on how to respond if you ever encounter an electrical fire in your home or workplace.

First Things First: Stay Calm and Act Fast

The key to controlling any fire is to remain calm and act quickly, but never recklessly. Electrical fires are different from other types of fires and must be handled with extra caution.

What Causes Electrical Fires?

Electrical fires can start for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Overloaded power strips or outlets
  • Faulty wiring or damaged cords
  • Malfunctioning appliances
  • Improper use of extension cords
  • Space heaters too close to flammable materials

Knowing the source of the fire helps you take the correct action. But if you’re unsure, always treat it as an electrical fire to be safe.

Steps to Put Out an Electrical Fire Safely

1. Cut the Power If You Can Do So Safely

If the fire is small and you can reach your circuit breaker without putting yourself at risk, shut off the power to the area immediately. This helps prevent the fire from spreading and makes it safer to extinguish.

NEVER use water on an active electrical fire. Water conducts electricity and could cause electrocution.

2. Use a Class C Fire Extinguisher

For electrical fires, only use a fire extinguisher labeled for Class C (or multipurpose extinguishers marked A-B-C). Aim at the base of the fire and use a sweeping motion.

If you don’t have a Class C extinguisher, do not use another type because it could make the fire worse or put you in danger.

3. Use Baking Soda (Small Fires Only)

If the fire is very small (like in a toaster or power strip), baking soda can help smother it. Baking soda releases carbon dioxide, which can starve the fire of oxygen. However, be cautious because it is not a guaranteed solution.

Do not use flour or sugar, as they are flammable and can cause the fire to explode.

4. Evacuate and Call 911

If the fire is spreading, the room is filling with smoke, or you’re unsure about handling it, then evacuate immediately and call 911. Never try to be a hero. Lives are more important than property.

Tips on Preventing Electrical Fires

  • Don’t overload outlets or extension cords
  • Replace damaged electrical wires and cords immediately
  • Schedule regular inspections by a licensed electrician
  • Use surge protectors for your valuable electronics
  • Install smoke detectors near electrical equipment

When to Call a Professional

Even if you extinguish a small fire, call a licensed electrician to inspect your wiring and determine what caused it. Hidden damage could lead to future hazards.

At Emerald Isle Electric, we’re here to help with inspections, upgrades, and emergency electrical services. If you've had a fire, or want to prevent one, contact us today to schedule a safety check.

What Does “Panel Size” Really Mean? Panel size refers to how much power your system can safely deliver, usually measured in 100, 150, or 200 amps . Think of it like plumbing: if your pipes are too small, you can’t run multiple faucets at once. The same goes for electricity. 5 Signs You May Need a Heavy Up Flickering or dimming lights when big appliances turn on Breakers that trip often or won’t reset easily No room left in the panel for new circuits Adding high-demand equipment like an EV charger, hot tub, or new HVAC system Your panel is 30+ years old , especially if it uses fuses or shows signs of corrosion What’s a Heavy Up? A “heavy up” is an upgrade to increase your home’s power capacity, usually raising the amperage from 100 to 200 amps. It often includes installing a new panel, meter box, and updated wiring from the utility. Why It Matters An undersized or outdated panel isn’t just inconvenient, it can be a fire hazard . By upgrading, you’re not only boosting performance and reliability but also protecting your home and family. A modern panel can safely power all your devices and accommodate future additions. Have you ever looked up at the power lines in front of your home and wished they weren’t there? You're not alone, and for good reason. Overhead power lines can be both an eyesore and a vulnerability, especially here in Central West Florida where hurricane season can wreak havoc on above-ground utility infrastructure. Homeowners in our service area (Hernando, Pasco, North Pinellas, & Citrus Counties) are opting to convert their electric service lines from overhead to underground. This type of upgrade improves curb appeal and significantly increases reliability during storms. Unlike overhead lines, underground service is protected from falling branches, high winds, and flying debris that can easily cause power outages.

As Florida residents prepare for the 2025 hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through November 30, storm prep is top of mind again. Beyond stocking emergency supplies and reinforcing windows, two of the most important steps homeowners can take are installing a whole home generator and a surge protector. While both offer valuable protection, having a reliable backup power source can make all the difference.
